For 30 years, Mark has served at the highest levels of corporate America as an award-winning CEO ghostwriter and long-time communications director dedicated to smart public advocacy through fast, clear, accurate and persuasive communication. With business goals, targets and deadlines relentlessly in mind, Mark has conceived and directed winning communications strategies and tactics from the home office, from the field, even once from a Central American jungle. He’s been on the losing side a couple of times too, and found it instructive.

In service to senior and executive management in the the C-suite of a Fortune 200 energy giant over more than two decades, Mark:

  • Led media relations around multibillion-dollar, value-adding mergers, acquisitions and divestitures, including a groundbreaking combination of two Fortune 250 energy companies that created the nation’s largest integrated energy company at the time.
  • Drafted forward-looking industry policy speeches by executive management at prestigious academic, industry and political forums that drove industry conversations constructively across the regulatory, public policy and consumer arenas during an era of complex regulatory change.
  • Provided break-through investor-relations support drafting the annual Chairman and CEO shareholder letters, corporate earnings releases, publications and stakeholder communications as the C-suite’s go-to executive writer.
  • Directed public outreach and education campaigns that helped to generate broad public support for beneficial new facility and infrastructure construction and asset acquisitions in the U.S., Latin America and United Kingdom.
  • Acted as holding company press spokesman to help publicize and promote transparency and factual accuracy around high-visibility financial, business and strategic issues often marked by complexity and nuance.

Biography

Before co-founding Hillenby with Rob and Katie, before his longtime client-side career in corporate communications, Mark worked after graduation from college as a print reporter. He covered police, crime and local government for two daily newspapers in Virginia and North Carolina. In just under three years, he was recruited to the former UPI wire service in Richmond to join a small team of writers and editors responsible for covering business, disaster, politics and general news, even hurricanes. Less than three years later, Virginia Power recruited Mark, where he served as press spokesman for its nationally prominent nuclear program, and the following year joined the utility’s parent company, Dominion Resources. There, Mark had responsibility for a tight-knit team handling, at varying times of corporate evolution, international communications, business media relations, corporate philanthropy, investor-relations support, C-suite speechwriting, employee communications and public outreach to support operations teams siting essential infrastructure to benefit the public in other states and nations.

He left Dominion in 2010 after 25 years to co-found Hillenby and return to his home state of North Carolina. There, he has served Hillenby’s broad array of NYSE-listed and privately held clients, first as a founding partner and to this day as a contributing senior consultant.
